What is Advent?

Advent marks the beginning of the liturgical calendar for the Roman Catholic Church. It is observed over the four weeks preceding Christmas and derives from the Latin adventus which means “arrival.” It is a Christian tradition intended to help us prepare for the coming of Christ into the world.

The season of Advent is all about waiting, praying and fasting in preparation for Christ to come as the light of the world. Its four weeks connect to four main themes: hope, peace, joy and love. Each week the readings and prayers focus on these themes, which help us prepare for Christmas.

This important season reaches its fulfillment at Christmas with the incarnation. It was in that moment when Jesus became human, like us, and showed us a new way to be in relationship with God. And so, during the season of Advent, we invite you to pray and reflect with us as we prepare to receive the light of Christ that will come at Christmas.
